Heroes and Hosts is an ongoing collaboration between artists Lisa D. Watson and Dana W. Richardson that celebrates the native plants, animals, and ecological relationships of the Southeastern Coastal Plain. Through art, observation, and storytelling, the project explores both the interconnectedness of living systems and the ways people share knowledge, build relationships, and come to know a place.

This website serves as a living archive of the project, documenting research, artworks, exhibitions, and creative discoveries as the collaboration continues to grow.

Originally presented at Telfair Museums' Jepson Center from June 2025 to May 2026 in Savannah, Georgia, Heroes and Hosts continues through new projects and exhibitions, including Botanica at the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island.

This land is home to the Guale, Muscogee (Creek), and other Indigenous peoples who stewarded the tidal ecosystems with relational knowledge. We also acknowledge the descendants of enslaved West and Central Africans, whose forced labor transformed this landscape, building its fields, navigating its creeks, and embedding their spirit and culture into the soil, and the Gullah-Geechee people, whose communities still dwell along the coast. We honor the people, plants, and animals who live here.
